If you like antique clocks the Clock Shop in the Shab Row area of Historic Frederick is a must see place! Here they restore some of the finest clocks ever created. This family business is an example of the kind of hands-on skilled restoration work that's hard to find. And, they're nice folks too!

The following article dated March, 1992 "Time Will Tell" by D. Wiles is reprinted from the Fredericktonian magazine: "Clocks and watches don't tell time; they record the passing of time," says Kenzie Smith. Smith has been a clockmaker for 20 years. "I 'worked' on my first clock when I was five," he says. "I dismantled my mother's art deco dresser clock - and couldn't get it back together."

Since that time he has mastered his trade and N. Kenzie Smith & Sons, Inc., in Jefferson, is a thriving family business. Sons Christopher, 25 and Keven, 18, have apprenticed under their father. 

"Ninety percent of the clocks we repair are antique," says Smith, who also maintains the clocks at Antique Imports on East Street. [the current shop is next door]  "One of the things that intrigues me most about restoring an antique clock is that when it is properly restored, not only should it look like it did 200 years ago, but the sounds it makes - ticking, striking, internal noises - will be just the same sounds the original owners heard when they brought it home from the clockmaker. It's the closest thing to time travel we'll ever experience."

No detail is overlooked and probably more important is the fact that here the work is all done by masters who won't go to school on your valuable clock! Their years of experience eliminates the trial and error common in many so-called restoration shops.
